our history

Charter Members and Companions in Service: PDG Ernest & Mary Chang; Lion Harry & Mary Chang; Priscilla & Lion Dr. Joseph Chang; Lion Theodore Chun, Lion Wilfred Pang; Lion David Young
While serving as President of the Waikiki Lions Club in 1972, Lion Wilfred Pang saw the need for a Lions club in the Chinatown neighborhood. He decided to actively recruit many of his friends in the local community to form the nucleus of a new club, the Honolulu Chinatown Lions Club. With 49 members, the Club was officially chartered by Lions Clubs International on March 7, 1973 with Lion Wilfred elected as its Charter President. A joint banquet with the Bay View
and Hawaii Kai Lions Clubs was held on May 12, 1973 to celebrate the founding of the three new clubs on Oahu.
Since its inception over a half-century ago, the Chinatown Lions Club has provided much needed humanitarian services and support, both locally and internationally. In addition to its in-club projects, our members also actively volunteer to assist other charitable organizations, as well as other Lions and Clubs in District 50 Hawaii. And with its support of both the Hawaii Lions
Foundation (HLF) and Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF), the Club impacts the lives of over a half billion people in Hawaii and around the world.
Our members have also served with distinction as leaders, at both the district and international level. Chinatown Lions have served as International Director, District Governors, Region and Zone Chairs, Cabinet Secretaries and Treasurers, and chairs of numerous District committees. At the Hawaii Lions Foundation, our Lions have served as Trustees, Eye Bank Chairs and Presidents.
The Honolulu Chinatown Lions Club is the home club of Past International Director Robert Lee, Past District Governors Ernest Chang and Keith Fukuda, Vice District Governor Dr. Cedric Mitsui and is the proud sponsor of the award-winning Roosevelt High School Leo Club for over twenty years. “WE SERVE” has been our International Association’s motto for over a century, inspiring 1.4 million Lions in over 200 Countries and geographical areas of the globe to humanitarian service.
